Deotala (Malda): “Bangal banchao, desh banchao; kheti banchao, desh banchao,” Medha Patkar gave a clarion call for action at a farmersrally here on Thursday. The social activist — an architect of the decades-old Narmada Banchao Andolan — is in poll-time Bengal to address kisan panchayats across districts in the wake of the Centre’s controversial farm laws.
“Malda has witnessed major erosion (over the years) and thousands have lost their land. Now, the BJP claims it will save Malda from erosion. Do not believe what it says. In the name of Namami Ganga, large sums of money were siphoned off while the rivers perished,” Patkar said, reminding her audience how 172 villages were “uprooted” to erect the statue of Vallavbhai Patel in Gujarat.
“People in Bengal have no experience with the BJP. But, people in Madhya Pradesh do. When the BJP raises corruption issue in Bengal, it forgets what it has been doing in Madhya Pradesh,” the Narmada leader said.
Patkar was accompanied by a host of other activists like Yogendra Yadav, Sunilam and Tejendra Singh in Deotala. Yadav, a founding member of Jai Kisan Andolan, minced no words as he spoke about the BJP and its senior leaders. “Like hum do hamare do, BJP’s (top) two Narendra Modi and Amit Shah have their two children — Ambani and Adani,” he said.
Speakers at the rally unanimously debunked the PM’s monthly aid promise of Rs 6,000 to farmers under the Kisan Samman Nidhi. “While thousands of farmers are agitating for 130 days and many have died, Modi shows no concern. The BJP only knows the language of votes. So, we have come here with the appeal of those farmers that Bengal must defeat BJP, which will herald the party’s defeat in India next,” Yadav said.
Among Bengal politicians, Malda Trinamool Congress leader Sumala Agarwala was present at the gathering.
