EDISON, NJ — Edison resident Pradeep Varma traveled to India a few weeks ago, as the COVID-19 crisis worsened in the South Asian country. Varma wanted to be in India to take care of his aging and sick parents.

But tragedy struck when Varma, 45, died of COVID-19 complications last week. He had no pre-existing medical conditions and lived a healthy lifestyle.

Back in the U.S, he leaves behind his wife and 9-year-old son Daksh, who has autism.

“Pradeep was a firm believer of doing good deeds and karmas,” said the GoFundMe page set up by Edison resident Amit Tiwari, his friends, and family members.

“He worked in Information Technology and professionally was very sincere and dedicated person, always looking forward to put in best effort for organization’s growth.”

Varma loved reading and playing tennis, said the page. But he was most concerned about his son Daksh.

Daksh was diagnosed with autism at age 3. “He loves painting, listening to nursery rhymes, dancing, being tickled, and spend tons of time with his father,” said the fundraiser.

Varma was the sole earning member of the family, and his death has created a huge emotional void and financial uncertainty for the family.

The GoFundMe hopes to raise funds to help with Daksh’s medical expenses and education.

“He has to attend special schools and multiple therapies that are expensive. Even with that, his future will always have uncertainty and lack stability,” Varma’s friends wrote in the fundraiser.

“The funds will help out tremendously to help secure Daksh’s future, including his medical and education expenses, while they try to get back to life without Pradeep.”

India is currently facing its worse COVID-19 outbreak with 368,060 new cases reported on Monday alone.

More than 200,000 people have died of the virus in the South Asian country, with crematoria overcrowded and people facing a shortage of oxygen supplies and vaccines.

Many local communities are raising funds to help people in the country fight the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the GoFundMe for Varma’s family is garnering strong support from the Edison community. In just three days the community raised $72,000.

“Please keep this family in your prayers, and we thank you for any help you may give.”
